The final result of the 2012 University of Edinburgh project Noise & Fidelity. The concept was to create a sound piece that explores the relationship between noise, signal, and intelligibility, using the Gertrude Stein Poem, If Told Him: A Completed Portrait of Picasso as the point of departure. The aim was to construct a multi-perspective sound portrait of the text as performed by Ali Maloney, with emphasis on the relationship between the subject as the carrier of the text, and the surrounding sound environment. Recording the performances from multiple perspectives was conceived of as a sonic analog to the poet’s own compositional technique.
